NEC4 v NEC3: It’s Changing – Are you ready?
Location: Riddel Hall, Stranmillis Road, Belfast
Date: 17 October 2018
The NEC family of contracts is now widely used in the water, civil engineering and construction industries, as well as power, water and oil and gas sectors.
Its original objectives were, compared with existing contract forms, to:
– be more flexible in terms of what it can be used for and the contract strategies that can be adopted;
– have greater clarity and simplicity, so that it is easier to understand and use; and
– stimulate good project management
NEC4 – the fourth edition – of the family was launched in July 2017 and publicised as ‘evolution not revolution’. From this Autumn, it will start to be used by the public sector in Northern Ireland. This session identifies and reviews the changes made as well as briefly highlighting changes that have not been made.
Before the break, Dr Jon Broome will give a quick introduction to the NEC families background and the objectives for NEC4, before looking at the changes which affect contract strategy e.g. additions to the family; alterations to main payment options and changes made to the secondary option clauses, including the dispute options.
After the break, Jon will focus on the changes in the Engineering and Construction Contract – many of which are replicated in other members of the contract family – with focus on the payment, programme, early warning and compensation event clauses.
