SPAB Ireland Working Party

Derry-Donegal Heritage Landscapes Alive 2017

As part of Derry-Donegal Heritage Landscapes Alive 2017 and on behalf of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (Ireland), we are delighted to invite you to participate in the inaugural SPAB Ireland Working Party taking place during Heritage Week, in Derry~Londonderry. Please see invitation flyer attached here.

Running from 24th – 27th August inclusive, this is the first ever SPAB Working Party on this island and focuses on using ‘hot-mixed lime’ mortar to conservatively repair a historic Victorian garden rubble stone wall, addressing its structural issues, whilst also retaining its associated natural heritage.  We are locating our Working Party within the unique designed heritage landscape of deBurgh Terrace in the city’s Clarendon Street Conservation Area.

Each year in the UK the SPAB runs a Working Party in England during which all sorts of people unite to carry out an element of repair – ‘hands on’.  Rolling their sleeves up and working side by side are experienced conservation craftspeople; construction/heritage professionals; students; historic building owners; and those who simply love old buildings and want to know more about how to look after them well – of all ages and from all walks of life.

Aristotle said “What we have to learn to do we have to learn by doing” and we are therefore delighted to be offering this premiere SPAB Ireland ‘hands on’ practical working party in the northwest so early in the life of the Irish branch of the SPAB.

Places are very limited and pre-application for consideration to secure a place is essential.  To receive an application form please email before 24h July.
