Experience Shared: Lunch with Barrie Todd

From getting qualified, to securing your first job, possibly setting up your own practice, winning work, surviving recessions, growing and ultimately retiring, the life of an architect in private practice is packed with challenging and rewarding experiences.

Mostly we learn from our own lived experience but there is much knowledge to be gained from others who have journeyed a similar path before us.

With this in mind, RSUA is holding an online event, ‘Experience Shared: Lunch with Barrie Todd’.

It will be a conversation between Ciarán Fox, RSUA Director and Barrie, with questions from the audience in advance and throughout. Feel free to have your lunch during it – let’s coin the phrase ‘mute and munch’.

The conversation might be particularly useful to early career architects but perhaps of interest to all members.

A bit about Barrie

Barrie did Part 3 of the architecture course whilst working under the guidance of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and failed due to lack of provision of practical experience. After working in a few practices, he, along with his interior designer wife Trish, founded Todd Architects.

From a first commission of a double garage in Carrickfergus, which never did get built, Barrie went on to grow Todd Architects to a staff of 100 between Belfast and London offices, weathering multiple recessions along the way. The practice won numerous awards over his years including the Liam McCormick Prize for the Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Beyond practice Barrie was amongst other things President of RSUA, founding Chair of the Ministerial Advisory Group on Architecture and the Built Environment and he established both the Cathedral Quarter Regeneration Group and the PLACE Architecture Centre
