Architects: Regulated by law

Architects are the only professionals in the built environment to be regulated by UK law. This is because the design of our built environment is of such importance to society and has long lasting implications.

It is illegal for a person to offer their services as an architect unless they are a fully qualified architect and are registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The aim of the register is to protect the public from people who present themselves are architects but who are either unqualified or are qualified in a different way. You can search the register of architects here.

As part of the requirement to register, architects must pay an annual charge to ARB. This is due by 31st December 2019. Architects can pay this fee here if they wish to remain on the register – failure to do so will result in being removed and losing the ability to practice.
