Climate Emergency Committee update

The Climate Emergency Committee met on the today to discuss a number of consultation responses, to propose CPD events and to plan a programme of work for the year ahead.

RSUA has continued to press the Department of Finance for the publication of draft Nearly-Zero Energy Building (NZEB) technical guidance. While there is still no definitive timeline for the consultation process, we hope the draft technical guidance will be published over the summer and will be adopted in early 2022.

RSUA Position Papers, one on the Climate Emergency and the other on the Role of Architects in a Mass Retrofit Programme, have been approved by RSUA Council. These papers are being prepared for publication. The Committee is now considering which policy areas to focus in on from the long list identified in the Climate Emergency paper.

Committee members are preparing RSUA responses to the Belfast City Council Air Quality Consultation as well as the AERA Committee Climate Change Bill consultation, and comments are being collated on the Circular Economy Strategic Framework call for evidence.

Ideas for CPD training were discussed, including impending building regulations, low energy retrofit and energy technologies. Further suggestions for training should be sent to Jude Faloon at

The next Climate Emergency Committee meeting will take place on 22 September 2021.
