Open Call: Housing Unlocked

22/03/2022

The Irish Architecture Foundation in collaboration with The Housing Agency are delivering an Open Call for ideas on how to improve the provision of housing in Irish cities, towns, and villages.

The project, titled Housing Unlocked, seeks multidisciplinary teams including at least one person with an architectural qualification to submit diverse and proactive proposals that address any aspect of the complex ecosystem that delivers housing in Ireland

For example, submissions could propose particular ways to move forward with imperatives such as environmental sustainability, universal design and social inclusion, or density; tackle challenges such as vacancy or the financial system underlying housing provision; or put forward alternative housing models.

This call is a chance to develop an innovative, practical solution into a funded proposal that will be exhibited at an ambitious public exhibition in Dublin City Centre in autumn 2022. The aim is to showcase innovative proposals from architects and their collaborators that demonstrate strong potential to improve our communal ability to provide everyone with high-quality, comfortable and sustainable communities and homes.

Requirements

All teams must include at least one person with an architectural qualification, but that individual is welcome to collaborate with anyone who can contribute proactively to a solutions-focused exhibition about Irish housing. Artists, environmentalists, academics, researchers, sociologists, accessibility advocates, policy makers, fabricators, town planners, and people with many other specialisms, can all make valuable contributions in this area, and are all encouraged to apply (alongside an architect).

On May 4 2022, a jury of experts will select around eight submissions for further development. These winning teams will receive €7,500 (including VAT) in funding to develop their idea for the public exhibition. The exhibition will open in September 2022 in a pop-up venue in central Dublin and will run for a minimum of 2 months, including during Open House Dublin. A public engagement programme will be run by the Irish Architecture Foundation to maximise the impact of the exhibition.

The Deadlines

Submission: Submissions must be made through the Housing Unlocked website before midnight on the 24 April 2022.

Winners Announced: Winning teams will be announced in May 2022. Exhibition Opens: September 2022
